In the acclaimed documentary SOME KIND OF MONSTER, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine, an original member of Metallica, emotionally conveys how it feels living in the shadow of his more successful former bandmates. Even at the commercial peak of 1992's COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION, Megadeth never watered down its sonic trademarks--Mustaine's sneering vocals and blazing guitar work, always backed by fierce, complex rhythms--a point reinforced by this excellent 17-song anthology. Classic Megadeth is well represented here--most notably with the stomping, bass-heavy "Peace Sells" and the sci-fi mini-epic "Hangar 18." But GREATEST HITS also leaves a generous amount of room for the group's finest latter-day tunes. With remastered sound and a well-selected track listing, this collection is an ideal introduction to the potent speed metal of Megadeth.
